Wirewerks’ New Base-8 Fiber Module Wins Broadband Technology Report 2019 Diamond Technology Award

Wirewerks’ new NextSTEP™ Base-8 Distribution Module optimizes fiber management for broadband network operators

Montreal – October 17, 2019 Wirewerks, a leading manufacturer of optical fiber, copper structured cabling systems and network infrastructure solutions, announced today that its NextSTEP Technology™ Base-8 Fiber Distribution Module was recognized in this year’s Broadband Technology Report (BTR) Diamond Technology Reviews awards program.

Wirewerks’ NextSTEP Technology fiber management system has earned several prestigious industry awards since its launch in 2017, and that trend continued this year with BTR Diamond Technology Awards for both the new NextSTEP 3-Series Base-8 Fiber Distribution Module and for the new NextSTEP Optical Distribution Frame, the industry’s first modular ODF designed to install in any 19” rack or cabinet.

Major IC and active equipment manufacturers project that their 40-400G Ethernet products will utilize transceivers designed for Base-8 eight-fiber connectivity solutions. Historically, many broadband network operators have built out their optical networks in eight-fiber groupings with 96 fibers per 1RU. These two factors drove Wirewerks’ development of the new NextSTEP 3-Series Fiber Distribution Module, providing Base-8 MPO connectivity with 1-3 MPO connectors at the rear of the module distributed to 24/12 LC/SC ports at the front of the module. The slide-in modules are compatible with any NextSTEP rack mount or wall mount enclosure, including the award-winning new NextSTEP Optical Fiber Distribution Frame (NSDF). NextSTEP 3S-Distribution Modules feature factory terminated and tested low-IL fiber connections with a complete choice of fiber and connector types to suit any application and installation environment.

The new 3-Series Modules join with the original range of NextSTEP 1-Series Modules to provide data center and network operators with their choice of fiber management solutions optimized for Base-2, Base-8 and Base-12 network designs.

Also recognized in this year’s BTR Diamond Technology Reviews was Wirewerks’ breakthrough NextSTEP Optical Distribution Frame (NSDF), a completely new modular ODF designed to install in customer-provided standard 19” racks or cabinets. The NSDF’s modular rack-mount design provides manageable high-density in a remarkably small footprint along with scalable pay-as-you-grow expansion, and easy cost-reduced shipping, handling and installation.

“Our engineers worked closely with our Data Center and Broadband communities on the development of the new NextSTEP 3-Series Base-8 Module and the completely new modular NextSTEP Optical Distribution Frame,” commented Edouard Tabet, Head of Engineering at Wirewerks. “Their collaboration during product development and subsequent deployment in their production networks has been invaluable in bringing these innovations to market and in earning these prestigious BTR Diamond Technology Review awards.”

Wirewerks’ Breakthrough NextSTEP Technology™ Fiber Distribution Frame Wins 2019 CI&M Innovators Award

New NextSTEP™ Fiber Distribution Frame is industry’s first modular FDF with integrated vertical cable management designed to install in any 19” rack or cabinet

MONTREAL – October 2, 2019 – Wirewerks, a leading manufacturer of optical fiber, copper structured cabling systems and network infrastructure solutions, announced today that its new breakthrough NextSTEP Fiber Distribution Frame (NSDF) was recognized with a prestigious Cabling Installation & Maintenance 2019 Innovators Award during a gala ceremony at the BICSI Fall Conference in Las Vegas this week.

Wirewerks’ new NSDF is the industry’s first modular fiber distribution frame designed to install in any standard 19” rack or cabinet. The NSDF system provides high fiber count, high-density fiber management and termination, including complete vertical cable management, slack management, routing, and strain relief features; all within the width of a standard 19” rack.

NSDF systems are assembled by mounting compact 6U NSDF building-block modules (‘blocks’) into customers’ own 19” racks or cabinets, with each modular NSDF block accepting any combination of 24 NextSTEP fiber modules. The NSDF’s narrow width (20.5” including the rack and vertical cable management) and slim depth (15.25”) yields a footprint of just 312.6 in2 — less than half that of current market leaders. Typical configurations in 44U racks yield a density of 5.53F/in2 of floor space, and higher densities may be achieved by installing additional NSDF blocks in 52U racks.

“The NSDF’s modular design, small footprint and manageable density were the key innovations recognized by our judging panel of industry experts,” stated Patrick McLaughin, Chief Editor at Cabling Installation & Maintenance.

“Our broadband, wireless and data center customers are rapidly adopting NSDF systems in their hubs and DCs,” commented Jess Dadoun, Director of Marketing at Wirewerks. “Beyond space savings and lower costs, many customers tell us they also value the fact that the NSDF’s design and manufacturing process conforms to Wirewerks’ corporate Sustainability Initiative. The NSDF not only has a smaller footprint, it’s greener as well.”
